NEMT Transport vs. Uber: Which Is Right for Your Loved One's Appointment?
If your loved one can walk on their own, get in and out of a regular car without help, and can travel alone safely, a rideshare may be fine for a simple appointment. If they use a wheelchair, need help at the door, cannot sit upright, are recovering from a procedure, or need a dependable ride every week, NEMT is the safer and more reliable choice.
When a parent, spouse, or grandparent has a medical appointment, getting there is often the hardest part. Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are fast and familiar, so they are usually the first thing families think of. But a medical trip is not the same as a trip to the mall, and for many patients the wrong ride can mean a missed appointment, an unsafe transfer, or a stressful day for everyone.
Here is how to tell whether rideshare or non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) is the right fit for your loved one.
The Short Answer
If your loved one can walk on their own, get in and out of a regular car without help, and can travel alone safely, a rideshare may be fine for a simple appointment. If they use a wheelchair, need help at the door, cannot sit upright, are recovering from a procedure, or need a dependable ride every week, NEMT is the safer and more reliable choice.
What Rideshare Does Well
Rideshare has real advantages, and it is fair to say so:
- It is quick to request and easy to use.
- It works well for independent riders on short, simple trips.
- It is convenient for occasional, low-stakes visits.
For a healthy adult going to a routine check-up, that may be all you need. The trouble starts when the patient needs more than a ride.
Where Rideshare Falls Short for Medical Trips
1. The vehicle may not fit the patient. Standard rideshare vehicles are regular passenger cars. They generally are not equipped with ramps, lifts, or wheelchair securement systems, and they cannot carry a patient on a stretcher. A wheelchair that is simply folded into a trunk leaves the patient to transfer into a car seat, which can be difficult and risky for someone with limited mobility.
2. Drivers are not trained in patient assistance. A rideshare driver's job is to drive. They are not trained in safe transfers, patient positioning, or securing a wheelchair, and they are generally not expected to help someone from their front door to the vehicle, or from the curb into the clinic.
3. Timing is not guaranteed. Rideshare is on-demand. Drivers can cancel, arrive late, or be unavailable, especially during rush hour, bad weather, or hurricane season. When the appointment is a dialysis session or a specialist visit that took weeks to schedule, a no-show driver is more than an inconvenience.
4. The return trip is uncertain. Getting to the appointment is only half the job. After a procedure or a long treatment, your loved one may be tired, dizzy, or in pain. Waiting for an available driver in a waiting room is hard on a patient who just wants to go home.
5. Nobody is coordinating with the care team. Rideshare drivers do not work with discharge nurses, facility staff, or caregivers. If something changes, there is no one on the other end who understands the situation.
What Is NEMT?
Non-emergency medical transportation is a ride built around the patient's medical and mobility needs. It is for people who need to get to care but do not need an ambulance. A good NEMT provider offers:
- ADA-compliant vehicles with ramps and secure tie-downs for wheelchair transportation
- Stretcher and bariatric stretcher vehicles for patients who cannot sit upright
- Drivers trained in medical transport, patient assistance, and securement
- Door-to-door help, not just curb-to-curb, including ambulatory transportation for patients who walk but need a trained driver
- Scheduled, confirmed rides, including return trips
- Coordination with families, facilities, and discharge staff
The key difference is that NEMT is designed for patients, while rideshare is designed for general passengers.
Which One Should You Choose?
Ask yourself these questions:
- Does your loved one use a wheelchair, walker, or stretcher? Choose NEMT.
- Do they need help getting out of the house or into the building? Choose NEMT.
- Is the appointment a procedure, treatment, or hospital discharge? Choose NEMT.
- Is the ride recurring, like dialysis or physical therapy? Choose NEMT.
- Do they have memory issues or anxiety about unfamiliar situations? Choose NEMT.
- Can they walk, ride alone, and handle a car safely, for a routine visit? Rideshare may work.
If you answered yes to any of the first five, a medical transport provider is the better option.
Special Situations Where NEMT Matters Most
Dialysis. Patients often go three times a week and feel drained afterward. Consistent, scheduled rides mean no missed sessions and no scrambling for a driver.
Hospital discharge. Patients leaving the hospital may be weak, in pain, or unsteady. A trained driver who coordinates with discharge staff makes the transition home much safer.
Children with medical needs. Pediatric patients, including those attending PPEC centers, need drivers and vehicles equipped for young passengers.
Seniors with limited mobility. Even a short trip can be difficult. Door-to-door help and a patient, trained driver bring peace of mind to the whole family.
A Note on Cost and Coverage
Rideshare may look cheaper per trip, but that comparison changes quickly once you factor in missed appointments, unsafe transfers, or the need for a caregiver to ride along. Coverage for non-emergency medical transportation varies by plan, so it is worth checking with your insurance provider or Medicaid plan about what is covered. If you ride regularly, a monthly ride plan can also make costs more predictable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is NEMT the same as an ambulance?
No. An ambulance is for emergencies and medical care en route. NEMT is for patients who need transport to or from a non-emergency appointment and may need mobility assistance.
Can I book a same-day ride?
Yes. At ATC, you can call for same-day and urgent requests, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Do I have to be in a wheelchair to use NEMT?
No. Ambulatory transportation is available for patients who can walk but want a professionally trained driver and door-to-door help instead of a rideshare.
